Commonwealth Marine Reserves
The Turnbull Government is currently considering the Independent Commonwealth Marine Reserves Review Report. It outlines recommendations regarding the future management of Australia’s marine parks.
In my view, there was no need for a review. The last Labor Government created the world’s largest network of marine protected areas resulting in the protection of over 3 million square kilometres as Commonwealth Marine Parks. I am proud of this achievement.
Labor and I condemn the Turnbull Government for cancelling the management plans for the Commonwealth Marine Reserve Network. I am particularly concerned that the Coral Sea is under threat with over 100,000 square kilometres set to lose protections. Labor and I also condemn the Government for failing to protect Australia’s oceans for future generations and is committed to the sustainable management of Australia’s marine resources.
