Our veterans and returned service men and women are always in the forefront of my mind. They fight for us overseas and then many return to Australia to fight battles with their own physical and mental health. The challenges they go through and the sacrifices they make deserve our respect and attention.
I am pleased to join with Labor has recently show support for our combat veterans by getting the government to agree to safeguards on the Veterans’ Affairs Legislation Amendment (Digital Readiness and Other Measures) Bill 2016, which previously would have allowed the release of private information about potentially fraudulent claims that had been ruled on by a computer program. This could have wrongly victimised our veterans so it was imperative that we put a stop to the practice before it began.
Veterans and their loved ones would also see more support under a Labor government to work out how best to support the transition into a civilian life and combat any on-going mental health issues facing veterans. Our policy is based on recommendations by the National Mental Health Commission’s review. No veteran should have to go it alone or feel left behind by the country they gave so much to serve.
